“In Brave Company - The Making of a Memorial”
In the course of researching RAF 158 Squadron and Bomber Command, Peter has become so passionate about it that he presents a talk on the designing and building of the 158 Squadron Memorial.
The talk is accompanied by about 200 computer slides that illustrate the multiple sections of this work - history, research, design, war memorials, construction, unveiling and more.
It’s an emotional subject delivered with an almost evangelical passion, and full of fascinating insights into how this memorial came into being. It appeals on many levels to anyone with an interest in art, history, or simply the human condition.
It proves surprisingly popular with women’s groups despite some members initially feeling that it will be ‘a rather male subject’. Peter is disappointed if the talk doesn’t bring someone to tears - even if it’s only him.
It’s more than a talk, it’s a mission!
“Dig for Victory! Making the Women’s Land Army Memorial”
This is an entertaining and fully illustrated talk on the making of his memorial to the Women’s Land Army - Britain’s first public memorial to the WLA and unveiled by HRH Prince Charles.
The talk deals with the research into the WLA and shows how this led to the design of the memorial. It then explains how it was constructed, transported and installed, and then finishes with the grand royal unveiling.
This heart-warming talk expresses the debt that Britain owes to the vital work of the WLA and their pivotal role in the general emancipation of women.
It is particularly suitable for women’s luncheon groups and WI, etc, but also appeals to anyone who enjoys art, history, and engineering.
If they are fit enough, Peter sometimes comes with two or three of his WLA veteran friends, usually in full WLA uniforms. They’ve heard the talk several times but will happily listen to it again for a free lunch!
“Gone: Fishing”
This is a fully illustrated talk on the making of the Lost Trawlermen of Hull Memorial.
The memorial was unveiled on Sunday February 12th 2017 by the Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Doctor John Sentamu.
The talk deals with the background research into the fishing industry, the designing of the sculptures, winning the commission and then the construction process, installation and unveiling of the memorial.
As with Peter’s other talks, this appeals to anyone with interests in history, art, engineering and simply the human condition.
