The HMS Sheffield Memorial
Nicknamed ‘Shiny Sheff’ because of the stainless steel that was used in its build, this memorial was unveiled in the National Memorial Arboretum on 4th May 2022, exactly forty years after it was sunk in The Falklands Conflict with the loss of twenty men.
It was both an honour and a delight to create this memorial. I collaborated with four Sheffield-based steel companies who all took great pride in making the piece. Outokumpu provided the steel. William Cook Cast Products particularly did a wonderful job of casting the heavy stainless steel base and then Tinsley Bridge made the ship section with its fantastic mirror finish shine. Finally Charles Day added the plaque.
The unveiling was an emotional day for many and perhaps it was fitting that the heavens opened and the service took place in torrential rain.
The memorial commemorates all three HMS SHEFFIELDs: the WW2 cruiser, the 1982 destroyer and the later frigate.
